Since I graduated from ECA 20 years ago, I have been drawn to the natural world for my inspiration.

For 15 years my work was solely about our native birds, their habits, the psychology of behaviour and identification taking away colour so I could capture exactly what made them be them and building up layers over time. 

I watched them, I drew them, photographed them and worked out how to capture them without any use of colour. My paintings are accurate enough for any birdwatcher to be able to identify the birds painted, just from their silhouette. 

For the past two years I have turned to their landscape - the tops of mountains, the coast, the farmed fields. In this move, my focus has become that of time - the passing of time. From the larger picture of the formation of the landscape, the erosion by glaciers, the human erosion from use and passage, the effect of the climate, the effect of seasons, our presence.  

My practise parallels this, each painting takes time and is a process of adding and taking away, a passing of time.
